Learn how to identify stone tools, pottery, and other artifacts at the Joara / Fort San Juan field school at the Berry site near Morganton North Carolina.
Your participation will help reveal new evidence of the interactions between 16th century Native Americans and Spanish explorers in western North Carolina.
The field school at the Berry site in northern Burke County off Hwy 181, began in 2001 in cooperation with Western Piedmont Community College. The field school is part of a larger project to study the archaeology of the Upper Catawba Valley. The field school integrates students and non-students in many different and fun activities that contribute to a growing understanding of the history of the Catawba Valley region.
No previous archaeological experience is necessary, but enrollment is limited. Children aged 14-15 years may enroll if accompanied by an enrolled adult. Children 16 years of age and older may enroll on their own.
