About EJF
The major Native American town, Joara, was visited by Spanish expeditions led by Hernando DeSoto (1540) and Juan Pardo (1566-1568). Pardo built Fort San Juan at the town of Joara in the Catawba Valley in 1567. Locally known as "The Berry Site," Joara was located just outside the modern city of Morganton, NC off Hwy 181N.
The Exploring Joara Foundation (EJF) is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization committed to public archaeology and the study of Native American and Spanish settlements in the upper Catawba and Yadkin river valleys between 1450 and 1700.
Founded in 2008, through an association with Warren-Wilson College in North Carolina, the goal of EJF is to provide a comprehensive regional public archaeology program in western North Carolina’s Catawba and Yadkin river valleys.
The Exploring Joara Foundation offers lectures, work-shops, field trips, and opportunities for students, teachers, and the general public, to work with professional archaeologists and to contribute directly to the important archaeological work in this region.
